15 Then the Pharisees, going out, took counsel as to how they might entrap him in speech. 16 And they sent their disciples to him, with the Herodians, saying: “Teacher, we know that you are truthful, and that you teach the way of God in truth, and that the influence of others is nothing to you. For you do not consider the reputation of men. 17 Therefore, tell us, how does it seem to you? Is it lawful to pay the census tax to Caesar, or not?” 18 But Jesus, knowing their wickedness, said: “Why do you test me, you hypocrites? 19 Show me the coin of the census tax.” And they offered him a denarius. 20 And Jesus said to them, “Whose image is this, and whose inscription?” 21 They said to him, “Caesar’s.” Then he said to them, “Then render to Caesar what is of Caesar; and to God what is of God.” 22 And hearing this, they wondered. And having left him behind, they went away.

13 And they sent some of the Pharisees and Herodians to him, so that they might trap him with words. 14 And these, arriving, said to him: “Teacher, we know that you are truthful and that you do not favor anyone; for you do not consider the appearance of men, but you teach the way of God in truth. Is it lawful to give the tribute to Caesar, or should we not give it?” 15 And knowing their skill in deception, he said to them: “Why do you test me? Bring me a denarius, so that I may see it.” 16 And they brought it to him. And he said to them, “Whose image and inscription is this?” They said to him, “Caesar’s.” 17 So in response, Jesus said to them, “Then render to Caesar, the things that are of Caesar; and to God, the things that are of God.” And they wondered over him.

20 And being attentive, they sent traitors, who would pretend that they were just, so that they might catch him in his words and then hand him over to the power and authority of the procurator. 21 And they questioned him, saying: “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and that you do not consider anyone’s status, but you teach the way of God in truth. 22 Is it lawful for us to pay the tribute to Caesar, or not?” 23 But realizing their deceitfulness, he said to them: “Why do you test me? 24 Show me a denarius. Whose image and inscription does it have?” In response, they said to him, “Caesar’s.” 25 And so, he said to them: “Then repay the things that are Caesar’s, to Caesar, and the things that are God’s, to God.” 26 And they were not able to contradict his word before the people. And being amazed at his answer, they were silent.
